Free Pregnancy Testing
If you think you are pregnant, you can go to a University Health outpatient women’s OB-GYN clinic for a free, same-day pregnancy test. Meet with a provider during the same visit who can answer your questions if you have a positive test result.
How to Choose a Prenatal Care Provider
Make sure you get maternity care that fits your needs and preferences. Learn about your options for prenatal care at University Health:
- Obstetricians (OB-GYNs) – Doctors with advanced training to care for women during pregnancy, labor and childbirth, and to provide gynecological (female reproductive system) care
- Certified nurse-midwives (CNM) – Nurses with specialized training to provide care for low-risk pregnancies during labor, delivery and postpartum care
- Family medicine with OB physicians – Doctors with training in primary care, including obstetrics
- Maternal-fetal medicine specialists (perinatologists) – OB doctors with additional years of education and training in treating high-risk pregnancies
Teen Pregnancy Care
Take advantage of a different approach to care if you’re a teen or young adult who is pregnant. Get medical care and education from staff specially trained to care for you in a supportive environment at our Teen Health clinic. Ask your provider for referrals to social services, Nurse-Family Partnership and other resources.
Your First Prenatal Visit
Count on your University Health provider to help you stay healthy during pregnancy. Schedule your first prenatal appointment as soon as you know you are pregnant. It will include:
- Meeting your provider, get to know each other and ask questions
- Blood work and lab tests
- Health screenings
- Physical exam
- Ultrasound to verify due date if needed
Patient Navigators
If you choose to receive care at one of our women’s clinics, you’ll work with a patient navigator — a staff resource person who offers support and guidance throughout your pregnancy. You’ll receive a welcome packet from your navigator with the “Your Prenatal Care” book during your first visit. The book serves as a guide to pregnancy and childbirth care at the Women's & Children's Hospital and includes:
- Schedule of prenatal care office visits
- Pregnancy and childbirth class descriptions
- Checklist of prenatal activities to prepare for childbirth
- Education about early warning signs of a problem
- List of what to bring to the hospital
- Birth plan outline
Talk with your patient navigator about joining CenteringPregnancy group prenatal care, getting pregnancy support services and finding financial assistance if needed.
Emergency Maternity Care
Come to the 24-hour OB-GYN center for emergencies if you have signs of a problem — abdomen pain, severe nausea, bleeding — or an emergency during your pregnancy. Depend on our expert team of specialists:

- Certified nurse-midwives

Signs of Labor
Talk to your provider during a prenatal care visit about what to do when you have signs of labor. Your provider will tell you when to go to the OB-GYN center for emergencies at the Women's & Children's Hospital.
