Planning for a Hospital Stay

If you need to stay overnight at one of our hospitals, we will make your stay as comfortable as possible. We’ll walk you through every step of the way, starting with admission. Your care team will give you specific instructions prior to your scheduled procedure.

Arriving at the Hospital

When you arrive at University Hospital, you’ll go directly to the Information Desk, located in Sky Tower, Level 1 of the main lobby.

When you arrive at the Women's & Children's Hospital, go to the Visitor Check-In desk in the Level 1 lobby of the Valero Atrium for directions.

The ambassador at the desk will direct you to the department where you’ll meet an admissions specialist, who will help you understand what to expect during your stay with us.

If you or your family need language assistance, please call us at 210-358-0600.

What to Bring

We want you to be as prepared as possible for your stay at one of our hospitals. Check this list of items to bring before you arrive and be sure to leave your valuables at home.

Patient Registration

When you arrive, you’ll be asked to register. The registration process helps us record your visit and ensures you’ll receive the care and attention you deserve. You will be asked to provide information such as:

  • Contact information
  • Family or emergency contact
  • Place of work
  • Type of health insurance

Please be sure to bring a photo ID and your health insurance cards. We will ask you to sign a consent form giving us permission to provide you with care and support.

During Your Hospital Stay

Our mission is to offer you, your family and visitors everything you need during your stay with us. We take care of the little things so you can focus on healing. We know it’s not home, but we want your stay with us to be as comfortable as possible. Our amenities take you, your family and other visitors into consideration.

Discharge from the Hospital

Going home from the hospital can be an adjustment after a hospital stay. We’re here to help you with the details, from packing your bag to scheduling follow-up appointments. If you arrive home and realize you’ve forgotten an important detail, please call our operator at 210-358-4000. Provide the floor or unit you stayed on, and you’ll be transferred to the floor nurse.
