Mitral Valve Intervention
The mitral valve allows for blood flow between the left atrium and left ventricle of the heart. With each heartbeat, the mitral valve closes tightly to prevent blood from flowing backward into the left atrium. When there is damage to the valve causing blood to flow backwards, that is called a mitral valve regurgitation.
Symptoms of Mitral Valve Regurgitation
If the valve is damaged, it allows blood to leak backward, causing symptoms including:
- Shortness of breath
- Fatigue
- Irregular heartbeat (arrhythmia)
- Swollen feet
- Swollen ankles
