Cardiovascular Center awarded “Superbowl” of heart care designations

National Distinction of excellence, HeartCARE Center, American College of Cardiology, 2026The American College of Cardiology, ACC, has recognized University Health’s Cardiovascular Center, CVC, with its highest credential for heart care: the HeartCARE Center National Distinction of Excellence. The CVC is the first in South Texas to earn this designation.

To receive this recognition a cardiovascular program must become accredited in at least two specialties. The ACC has accredited three University Health treatment areas: chest pain, catheterization and transcatheter aortic valve replacement, also known as TAVR.

“It’s like winning the Superbowl,” said CVC Executive Director Virginia Travieso. “Receiving this prestigious, national distinction of excellence confirms University Health provides high-quality cardiovascular practices with excellent patient care outcomes.”

Dr. Anand Prasad, CVC medical director and interventional cardiologist, said the rigorous accreditation process examines the entire cardiology program: its access to hospital resources, nursing support, the non-invasive catheterization lab and its reporting of patient outcomes.

“This is the seal of approval from the American Cardiology Association,” he said. “Patients can be reassured we are providing very comprehensive care.”

University Health’s multiple program accreditations come as the CVC expands to provide care through its many specialized clinics. They include its Structural Heart and Valve Center, an Adult Congenital Heart Center, the Limb Salvage Clinic, Pediatric Cardiology, the Cardiac Kidney Metabolic Clinic and its Women’s Heart Center.

“We have such a dedicated team of cardiovascular physicians and staff,” Travieso said. “That’s what you need to receive and maintain these accreditations.”
