Business Administration Intern
Primary Responsibilities
This internship provides hands-on experience in administration, business operations and payer relations. Interns will support administrative and operational functions within health care departments, assisting in projects that enhance efficiency, compliance and financial performance.
Duties May Include
- Assist in data analysis, reporting and financial documentation related to payer contracts and reimbursement.
- Support process improvement initiatives, policy research and administrative workflow optimization.
- Help prepare presentations, reports and other materials for leadership.
- Attend meetings with business and health care leaders to gain exposure to strategic decision-making.
- Research health care regulations, payer policies and industry trends.
- Provide general administrative support, such as scheduling, document organization and correspondence.

Communications Intern
Primary Responsibilities
A communications intern plays a key role in supporting University Health’s strategies to engage with patients, team members and the South Texas community effectively. The on-hands experience provides a unique opportunity to contribute to our mission of delivering quality patient care and maintaining community trust.
Duties May Include
- Content Creation: Drafting newsletters, press releases, social media posts and other communication materials to promote hospital events, achievements and programs.
- Social Media Management: Assisting in managing the hospital’s social media accounts, including posting updates, monitoring engagement and responding to inquiries.
- Internal Communication: Supporting the creation of materials for internal use, such as staff memos, intranet updates or employee engagement campaigns.
- Event Support: Helping plan and execute events, such as health fairs or community outreach initiatives, by creating promotional materials and providing logistical assistance.
- Media Relations: Assisting with media monitoring, drafting press releases and maintaining relationships with local news outlets.
- Brand Management: Ensuring that all communications align with the hospital’s brand guidelines and messaging standards.
- Graphic Design: Use of programs within the Adobe Creative Suite to support content creation.
Education & Experience

- Pursuing or holding a degree in communications, public relations, marketing, graphic design or a related field.
- Strong writing and editing skills, AP Style.

Community Engagement & Population Health Intern - Carelink
Primary Responsibilities
The Department of Community Engagement and Population Health at CareLink welcomes students to complete their internship requirements for Community Health, Public Health or similar degree programs. This internship provides hands-on experience in public health and community outreach.
Duties May Include
- Participate in onboarding training as provided by CareLink staff.
- Lead health education presentations to internal partners and external community members.
- Participate in community events to promote CareLink programs and services.
- Participate in grant-funded program activities.
- Assist with program research and review.
- Conduct one-on-one health education activities.
- Prepare engagement and program materials as needed.
- Attend and engage in CareLink staff meetings and other internal meetings when appropriate.
- Attend and engage in community partner meetings.
- Surveying clients either in person or by phone using a given set of measures.
Education & Experience
- Applicant must be classified as a senior and have internship requirements for a Community Health, Public Health or similar degree program.
- Students should be familiar with Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Will will provide training and guidance for activities and tasks as needed.
- Completion of HIPAA training required and ability to handle confidential information with professionalism
This internship is at the CareLink administration office located at Oaks II. There may be some off-site travel, but ride-sharing with other team members is done as much as possible.
Dress code is business casual, with the attire policy provided before the start date. Students must complete the internship process through their university internship advisor.

Community Outreach Intern
Primary Responsibilities
Community outreach interns coordinate communication efforts, including planning, development and implementation of the program. This intern will also coordinate written translation services and is responsible for writing, editing and disseminating messages to internal and external audiences. In addition, this intern will conduct internal and external surveys, as well as interviews, to measure the effectiveness of communication programs.
Duties May Include
- Assist with developing and implementing communication plans to internal and external audiences.
- Assist with providing timely responses to requests for information and proactively working with internal and external audiences.
- Assist with identifying content needed for translation from English to Spanish.
- Assist with tracking communication efforts with internal and external audiences.

Information Technology Intern
Primary Responsibilities
As an IT Intern, you will support the hospital’s Information Technology team by assisting with system maintenance, troubleshooting technical issues and contributing to various IT projects. This internship offers hands-on experience in a health care IT environment, providing exposure to network infrastructure, software support, cybersecurity and IT project management.
Duties May Include
- Assist with troubleshooting hardware, software and network-related issues.
- Support IT staff in the installation, configuration and maintenance of hospital systems.
- Provide basic technical support to hospital employees, including password resets and assistance with system navigation.
- Help maintain IT documentation, including system configurations and troubleshooting guides.
- Assist with inventory management of IT equipment and peripherals.

Institute for Public Health Intern
Primary Responsibilities
An intern with the Institute for Public Health will coordinate public health functions within University Health and prioritize services in collaboration with community partners and internal stakeholders that provide public health services in Bexar County, including a specific focus on underserved areas.
Duties May Include
- Assist with coordinating, planning, developing and implementing University Health’s program to help patients address social determinants of health.

Language Services Intern
Primary Responsibilities
A language services intern will help bridge the communication gap and ensure access to health care for all communities. In this role, you’ll support our mission to provide effective communication for patients and families with limited English proficiency or hearing impairments, ensuring they receive the highest quality of patient care.
Duties May Include
- Translation and Interpretation Support: Assisting with the translation of patient education materials, consent forms and other health care documents. As well as shadowing professional interpreters during patient encounters to observe best practices in medical interpretation. Learning about and applying medical terminology in multiple languages.
- Program Coordination: Maintaining and updating databases of language service requests and interpreter assignments and assisting in the development of multilingual resources and materials.
- Research and Process Improvement: Participating in cultural competency training programs, collecting data on language service usage, compiling reports for program evaluation, researching best practices in language services, presenting findings to the team and identifying opportunities to enhance language access for patients and families.
Education & Experience
- Applicants must be classified as a junior or above, attending a higher institution of education and receiving class credit for the internship.
- Current enrollment in an accredited undergraduate or graduate program in one of the following fields: Linguistics, Translation and Interpretation Studies, Public Health, Communications, Healthcare Administration or Social Work

Patient Experience Intern
Primary Responsibilities
University Health strives to deliver a meaningful patient experience. Using the AIDET (Acknowledge, Introduce, Duration, Explanation, Thank You) model, patient experience interns will gain experience in different roles that contribute to patient satisfaction and operational excellence. Internships are available in Customer Relations, Administrative Support, Environmental Services and Culinary Services.
Duties May Include
- Customer Relations: Greeting patients and visitors, providing directions and assisting with inquiries. Supporting patient satisfaction surveys and collecting feedback. Assisting with patient rounds to ensure concerns are being addressed promptly, as well as creating and distributing educational materials and welcome packets.
- Administrative Support: Scheduling appointments and managing patient-facing communications. Maintaining and organizing patient records or departmental files. Assisting with administrative tasks such as data entry and report preparation. Coordinating logistics for team meetings and patient experience events.
- Environmental Services (EVS): Observing and assisting in maintaining clean, safe and welcoming environments. Learning about infection control protocols and their impact on patient safety. Assisting with quality assurance checks in patient rooms and common areas and supporting EVS staff in delivering high standards of cleanliness and hospitality.
- Culinary Services: Assisting in meal preparation and delivery to patients, ensuring dietary needs are met. Observing dietary consultations and learning about nutrition in healthcare. Helping with special initiatives, such as cultural or themed meals and supporting efforts to improve food service feedback and patient satisfaction.
Education & Experience
- Applicants must be classified as a junior or above, attending a higher institution of education and receiving class credit for the internship.

Reporting & Data Management Intern - Information Technology
Primary Responsibilities
This IT Intern will support the hospital’s Epic Cogito team by assisting with system maintenance, troubleshooting technical issues and contributing to various Epic report projects. This internship offers hands-on experience in a health care IT environment, providing exposure to database infrastructure (SQL), Epic’s EMR (Electronic Medical Record), software support, data security and IT project management.
Duties May Include
- Assist with troubleshooting queries, stored procedures, roles and database-related issues.
- Support Epic staff in the creation of queries, stored procedures, report templates, dashboards and other reporting assets.
- Help maintain Epic Cogito documentation, including system configurations and troubleshooting guides.

Primary Responsibilities
In this role, you’ll work alongside licensed social workers in health care to address the emotional and psychological needs of patients.
Duties May Include
- Patient and Family Support: Conducting initial assessments of patients’ social, emotional and economic needs under supervision. Assisting with discharge planning, including referrals to community resources and post-hospital care services. Providing emotional support to patients and families facing medical challenges.
- Case Management: Supporting the coordination of care plans between healthcare providers, patients and external agencies. Maintaining and updating case files and documentation in compliance with hospital policies. Participating in case conferences and interdisciplinary team meetings.
- Resource Navigation: Researching and connecting patients with community resources, including financial assistance, housing and transportation. Helping patients navigate insurance and benefits programs. Advocating for patients’ rights and access to necessary services.
- Program Development and Outreach: Assisting in the development of patient education materials and support group resources. Contributing to hospital initiatives addressing social determinants of health. Participating in outreach programs to build partnerships with local organizations.
Education & Experience
