Heart Disease in Women: Risks & Early Warning Signs

Heart disease can look different in women than in men. The signs are often more subtle.

Common symptoms of heart disease in women include:

  • Chest pain, pressure or discomfort
  • Shortness of breath
  • Fatigue or unusual weakness
  • Nausea or dizziness
  • Pain in the neck, jaw, shoulder or back

Some women experience less obvious symptoms, which can delay care.

Risk factors for heart disease in women:

  • High blood pressure
  • Diabetes
  • High cholesterol
  • Smoking
  • Hormonal changes (including menopause)
  • Pregnancy-related complications

Knowing these signs and risks can help prevent serious problems like heart attacks and strokes.
