The University Health team of pediatric gastroenterologists, nurses and dieticians are committed to improving your child’s gastrointestinal and nutritional health, no matter how simple or complex the condition might be. Our pediatric gastroenterologists are board-certified and fellowship-trained.
We treat nearly 2,000 children every year with comprehensive, compassionate care in a family-friendly environment so our youngest patients feel welcome and comfortable.
Children are not small adults — they have special medical needs. Our specialists know gastrointestinal problems can be painful and sometimes frightening. We aim to provide comfort and support along with the highest level of care in South Texas.

The entire team at University Health is well versed in treating GI conditions. We provide expert care for pediatric digestive problems, along with liver and pancreatic conditions. Our physicians are experts in endoscopy and liver transplantation. Children need exceptional, comprehensive care to improve their GI health — and that’s our goal.
The nurses at University Health are also nationally recognized for giving patients the highest level of care. We are South Texas’ first health system to earn the prestigious Magnet status from the American Nurses Credentialing Center. We earned this designation by our proven track record for providing excellent care and outcomes.
Women and Children’s Hospital
University Health is building the region’s first and only Women's and Children’s Hospital, which will be dedicated to the unique needs of women, children and babies.
The hospital will include:
- A dedicated pediatric emergency department
- Private rooms large enough for family members to stay with the child
- Pediatric rehabilitation gym
- Family resource centers
- A Child Life Center with a theater, game room and indoor playground
The hospital is expected to open in 2023.
