Volunteer Opportunities

Choose a Volunteer Position that’s Right for You

Whether you have a specific area of interest or if you just want to lend a hand in any way possible, we encourage you to join our volunteer team. We welcome volunteers at all of our facilities in San Antonio.

Below are just some of the opportunities available to our volunteers. Most opportunities are available year-round, Monday through Friday. We ask that our adult volunteers commit to four hours one day per week, and about 100 hours a year. Apply to become a volunteer.

Patient Floor Volunteer

Patient floors include general medicine, physical therapy, newborn nursery, neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and more. Volunteers may provide clerical assistance, help patients and families with various needs or perform more physical tasks such as stocking supplies.

Volunteer Ambassadors

A volunteer ambassador is the first person many of our patients and visitors see. These volunteers possess exceptional customer service skills as they answer questions and offer assistance with way-finding at the information desk.

Floater Volunteer

The hospital's needs vary from day to day. Volunteers may be assigned to an office setting, a patient floor or a special project; it depends on the need that day.

Pediatrics Volunteer

Our Child Life volunteers receive special training for their work with children. These volunteers may assist in the playroom, visit with patients or conduct clerical tasks as requested by nursing staff and child life specialists. Read more about the Child Life specialty volunteer group.

Spiritual Care Volunteer

Spiritual Care volunteers receive special training in order to effectively comfort patients and their families. Read more about the Spiritual Care specialty volunteer group.

Paws Up Pet Therapy Volunteer

Our pet therapy volunteers bring comfort to patients through animal love. These volunteers receive special training to bring their cat or dog to University Hospital and interact with patients and their families. Pets must be registered with a professional therapy animal group before volunteering can begin. Read more about the Paws Up Pet Therapy specialty volunteer group.

Our pet therapy ambassador volunteers work alongside our pet teams (handlers) and their furry friend to ensure patient visits are properly guided and help promote a safe and positive furry experience. No previous experience with therapy animals is required. Apply to become a Pet Therapy Ambassador.

Foster Grandparent Volunteer

Volunteers who are 55 or older may receive special training to help our nurses care for babies in the neonatal intensive care unit or newborn nursery units. Read more about the Foster Grandparent specialty volunteer group.

Other Volunteer Talents

Volunteers interested in donating their time in a specialized or virtual space have numerous opportunities available to them! You may be interested in working on a special project, coordinating a neighborhood magazine drive, quilting, sewing or other acts of service. We would love for you to share your talent.
