Moms "FaceTime" with Their Babies
University Hospital is connecting moms and babies through technology
BACKGROUND: There’s nothing more calming than the sound of a mother’s voice for a child. It’s just as comforting for a mother to hear and see her baby — especially when mom and baby have to spend a few days or weeks longer in the hospital due to medical reasons, and mom isn’t strong enough to visit her new bundle of joy in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
But thanks to a familiar technology, University Hospital’s NICU is now able to connect moms with their babies, using iPads and Apple’s FaceTime app. Moms can see and hear their babies remotely. While it’s not the same as holding their babies, it can lessen the anxiety and stress of separation. Mothers feel at ease knowing their babies are being well-cared for by the NICU team through the new “Baby Chat” program.
