Specialized Critical Care

Specialized Critical Care

At University Health, we provide specialized critical care for patients recovering from complex surgeries and living with serious heart, lung or liver disease.

Compassionate, World-Class Care

Our Intensive Care Unit has 22 beds and offers world-class critical care to patients undergoing liver, kidney and lung transplantation, as well as major heart and chest surgeries and those with advanced heart disease.

This specialized unit is staffed with around-the-clock care by our advanced practice providers and board-certified critical care physicians. Our multidisciplinary team also includes highly experienced critical care nurses, respiratory therapists, physical and occupational therapists, pharmacists and dietary specialists. Each team member brings deep expertise and compassion in caring for transplant and cardiovascular patients.

Life-Sustaining Therapies

In addition to comprehensive, state-of-the-art ICU care, we provide specialized life-sustaining therapies, including:

  • Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO)
  • Continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT)
  • Plasma exchange
  • Intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP) support
  • Temporary left ventricular assist devices (LVADs)

We also serve as a regional referral center for patients with acute-on-chronic and fulminant hepatic failure.
