University Health ranked third in the nation for social responsibility

University Health has been named one of the top hospitals in the nation for social responsibility, the Lown Institute announced Tuesday.

Using publicly reported data, the nonprofit Lown Institute compared 2,689 acute care hospitals across the country in numerous categories, including health equity, value and patient outcomes.

“This recognition reflects our commitment to providing exceptional care for every patient who entrusts us with their health, regardless of their background, circumstances or ability to pay,” University Health Chief Medical Officer Bryan Alsip said.

“At University Health, social responsibility is not a separate initiative – it is embedded in our culture supporting the advancement of quality and patient safety and addressing health disparities,” Dr. Alsip said. “Being ranked third in the nation is an honor and it affirms that our physicians, nurses and other staff are making a meaningful difference in the lives of the people we serve every day.”

Excellence and a healthy culture ensure quality

University Health President and CEO Edward Banos said a culture of excellence is essential to high-quality care.

“One of the most rewarding aspects of our organization is knowing that every team member is committed to doing the right thing for the people we serve. That shared commitment creates a culture where quality and equity are not separate initiatives—they are embedded in everything we do,” Banos said. “With empowered staff making the right decisions every day, excellence becomes the expectation, and quality continues to build on itself, creating better outcomes for our patients and communities.

“Happy employees are often happier people, and patients and families notice the positive energy and care,” he said. “I am so proud of how our employees bring this to their work. It makes a meaningful difference in a patient's overall experience.”

How hospitals are ranked

The Lown Institute Hospitals Index evaluates hospitals on their social responsibility, including metrics of health equity and value of care alongside traditional patient outcomes.

University Hospital received an “A” rating in all three categories of equity, value and outcomes.

The index considers what hospitals do as care providers, employers and community partners. They highlight those hospitals that provide exceptional, high-value patient care to all who need it in their community in order to encourage all hospitals to follow their example.
