Public Invited to See Drawings & Models for New University Health System Buildings
Open House, Saturday, August 22 from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. includes all submissions for $899.4 million Target 2012 Program
What did some of the nation’s most prestigious architectural firms propose for the massive expansion planned for University Hospital and University Health System - Robert B. Green Campus? Simply put, all of the submissions for the $899.4 million Target 2012: Capital Improvement Program were impressive and featured the very latest in healthcare technology in an efficient and welcoming environment. They will all be on display this Saturday at an Open House at the Center for Architecture at the Pearl Brewery.
The models and renderings to be featured at this event were submitted as part of two Design Challenges, held this spring to select architectural teams for the new one million-square-foot tower to be constructed at University Hospital, and the new diagnostic and treatment facility to be built at University Health System - Robert B. Green Campus. The teams will be on-hand to discuss their designs and approaches to the projects.
"University Health System is the hospital district owned by the taxpayers of Bexar County, so we are holding this event to give everyone in the community the opportunity to see what the future holds for their health system," said University Health System President/CEO George B. Hernández, Jr.
The team of Perkins + Will, Garza/Bomberger & Associates and RVK Architects was selected to design the hospital site. The $629 million new tower at University Hospital will include a large, state-of-the-art emergency center, more operating rooms and several floors of inpatient nursing units with single-patient rooms to protect privacy and maximize infection control.
The downtown project architectural team includes RTKL Associates with Overland Partners and Paul Anthony. The new $92 million diagnostic and treatment building at University Health System - Robert B. Green Campus will enable more outpatient services to be provided outside the hospital, in a more convenient location for many patients.
The Capital Improvement Program also includes new parking structures and an additional $178 million in renovations to existing buildings at both locations. Groundbreaking on some of the enabling projects for the new tower at the hospital is expected before the end of the year. Work should begin on both the tower and the downtown facility during 2010. The first phase of the downtown project should be completed in 2012 and the new tower at the hospital will open on 2013.
The Open House, hosted by the Architecture Foundation of San Antonio, will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Full Goods Building at the Pearl Brewery, 200 East Grayson, just north of downtown. The event is sponsored by Jacobs, Broaddus + Munoz, Parsons, Perkins + Will, RVK Architects, Garza/Bomberger & Associates, RTKL Associates, and Overland Partners Architects.
