University Hospital is one of America’s Best Hospitals
- No. 1 in San Antonio region, 3 years in a row
- No. 6 in Texas (up from 17th last year)
- Top 50 in the nation in two specialties
The results of U.S. News & World Report’s annual Best Hospitals rankings are in, and University Health System earned significant regional, state and national recognition. In the report, published today, U.S. News names University Hospital best in San Antonio, No. 6 in Texas, and among the top 50 in the country for the care of patients with kidney disease and urological conditions.
This is the 24th year for the prestigious rankings, which recognize hospitals that excel in treating the most challenging patients. University Health System is in elite company as one of just 3 percent of U.S. hospitals to earn a national Top 50 ranking in any specialty. The health system owned by the people of Bexar County is also among the 15 percent of hospitals recognized as high-performing in their regions. For South Texas, University Health System is recognized for excellence in the areas of diabetes and endocrinology, geriatrics, gynecology, orthopedics, pulmonology and rehabilitation.

University Health System is the primary teaching partner for the School of Medicine at the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio. “Having advanced care and a nationally recognized academic medical center close to home is something most people don’t think about until they need it. “A hospital that emerges from our analysis as one of the best has much to be proud of,” said Avery Comarow, U.S. News Health rankings editor. “U.S. News publishes Best Hospitals to help guide patients who need a high level of care because they face particularly difficult surgery, a challenging condition, or added risk because of other health problems or age.”
Objective measures such as patient survival and safety data, nurse staffing levels and other data largely determined the rankings in most specialties.
The specialty rankings and data were produced for U.S. News by RTI International, a leading research organization based in Research Triangle Park, N.C. using the same data. U.S. News produced the state and metro rankings.
