Hurricane baby born at University Hospital

Expectant mother from Rockport staying in shelter brought to hospital to deliver

(SAN ANTONIO, TX) Even though her mom and family had to evacuate Rockport because of Hurricane Harvey and were staying in a San Antonio shelter, the baby didn’t want to wait. In fact, she arrived a few days early. When a University Health System nurse working at the shelter realized Shanika Jones was going into labor, she brought her to University Hospital to deliver little Zakaiya Grace at 6:31 p.m. Wednesday.

Mother and baby are available for interviews today at 3:30 p.m. Please contact a Corporate Communications representative by email if you plan to be there.

University Health System is part of a community-wide, coordinated relief effort to provide care and housing for victims of Hurricane Harvey. Bexar County, San Antonio, area healthcare systems and organizations, EMS agencies, nonprofit agencies and ordinary citizens and businesses have once again demonstrated.
