San Antonio Business Journal interviews director of state-of-the-art program
While heart disease remains the leading cause of death in the United States, research and breakthroughs have led to medications and treatments that are improving longevity and a patient’s quality of life.
In a videotaped interview with the San Antonio Business-Journal, Dr. Anand Prasad, director of the University Health Cardiovascular Center, the CVC, described how his team delivers state-of-the art treatments through targeted cardiovascular programs. Recognizing heart disease is often linked to other serious illnesses including diabetes, kidney failure and respiratory illnesses, cardiologists collaborate with other specialists to create treatment plans that simultaneously tackle the multiple health problems.
These targeted programs include: the Women’s Heart Center, which helps pregnant patients with heart conditions safely deliver healthy babies; the Limb Salvage Clinic, which provides advanced cardiovascular care to diabetic patients and often prevents amputations; and the Adult Congenital Heart Disease Program, the only one in South Texas dedicated to adults born with heart defects. The Structural Heart and Valve team treats complex cardiac issues using minimally invasive techniques instead of open-heart surgeries which require longer recovery times.
As University Health expands its Bexar County footprint with new hospitals and clinics, the cardiovascular program is growing with it. It is caring for patients in the recently opened Vida clinic on the Southside and preparing to offer heart care in three additional hospitals opening this year and next.
