Flu Season Is Back

Getting an annual flu shot is a good idea for almost everyone, but COVID-19 has made protecting yourself from the flu even more important. Cases of the flu have been down the past couple of years, likely due to masking and physical distancing we've practiced during the pandemic. But a rise in flu cases in Australia suggests that this flu season may affect more people.

“Information coming out just recently is showing that Australia is having more influenza this year than they had in 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic, so we may see a rebound of influenza activity,” said Dr. Jason Bowling, chief epidemiologist at University Health.

Getting COVID-19 and the Flu at the Same Time

It is possible to be infected with COVID-19 and the flu at the same time, so we should do everything we can to reduce our risk of getting sick.

Influenza and COVID-19 are both serious illnesses, and they share a number of common symptoms, including:

  • Fever
  • Cough
  • Fatigue
  • Chills
  • Body aches

Getting your flu shot reduces your risk of catching the flu and can reduce the overall risk of flu illness in the community by 40%-60% in a given season, according to the CDC.
