Fred never expected to need an emergency colonoscopy, but when sudden symptoms appeared, concern quickly turned into an urgent hospital visit.
An Emergency Colonoscopy
In 2025, at the age of 69, Fred was taken into emergency care in Corpus Christi, Texas, for a colonoscopy due to escalating liver pain. This emergency colonoscopy not only addressed Fred’s immediate crisis but also revealed a silent, life-threatening condition before it could worsen.
During the colonoscopy, his surgeon identified three polyps. Luckily, the care team removed two of the polyps, but the third was highly concerning and needed to be examined by a specialist. Fred’s urgent need for a specialist led him directly to University Health’s Advanced Endoscopy program in San Antonio, Texas.
Under the care of Dr. Paul Kaimakliotis and the University Health Advanced Endoscopy team, Fred was treated for liver cirrhosis, liver cancer and early colon cancer. With high praise and undeniable confidence, Fred shares that meeting Dr. Kaimakliotis and trusting the high-quality care at University Health was truly a ‘turning point’ for his health.
Fred’s Road to Recovery
Throughout Fred’s journey, he has experienced significant muscle loss, particularly in his legs. Once Fred is healthier and stronger, he eagerly looks forward to long walks, jogging and going up stairs without using a cane. Fred’s experience is a powerful reminder that listening to your body and acting quickly can make a life-saving difference.
