About
“What I hold most important as an orthopedic surgeon is providing compassionate, evidence-based care that respects the dignity and autonomy of every patient.”
I am an orthopedic surgeon specializing in adult reconstructive joint and spine surgery within orthopedics and sports medicine.
My inspiration to pursue medicine came first and foremost from my father, an immigrant from Mexico whose family settled near the original Robert B. Green Campus. As a young man, he grew up inspired by the doctors and nurses practicing the art and science of medicine at the downtown campus. That was one of the principal reasons he became a doctor.
For me, coming back to the Robert B. Green Campus feels like a full-circle moment, paying my respects to the community and doctors my father saw as a young man. Watching his compassion, humility and unwavering commitment to helping others left a lasting impression on me. His journey included practicing at the Lutheran Hospital, now known as the Texas Diabetes Institute, where I currently practice orthopedics.
This history has made practicing medicine feel less like a career choice and more like a calling.
Personal Note
Orthopedic care is often inaccessible to many people in our community, but at University Health, I can provide advanced orthopedic and surgical care to patients who may not otherwise have access.
Professional Background
After completing an orthopedic residency and spine externship in San Antonio, I began my career in Houston, focusing primarily on spine surgery. After two years, I moved to San Antonio to start a sports medicine and rehab orthopedic practice with colleagues.
We joined with the San Antonio Orthopedic group in 1997 with seven members, and it helped grow to the largest orthopedic group in San Antonio.
Career Highlights
While my focus has been on my practice and surgical skills, throughout my career, I have published a few articles and a book on blood loss during spinal surgery.
I was the first orthopedist in South Central Texas to implant autologous cartilage into a knee. Another career highlight of mine is being the first to use Globus navigation robotic placement of pedicle screws and the first to perform a macro navigation robotic partial knee replacement in San Antonio.
Philosophy of Care
I believe in listening carefully, respecting and treating every patient the way I would want to be treated myself. Physicians are entrusted with the most personal aspects of patients’ lives, and that responsibility requires empathy, integrity and thoughtful collaboration in every decision.
Favorite Parts of Medicine
The surgical component of orthopedics keeps me engaged in the unique aspects of patient care.
Restoring mobility and function, which results in measurable improvements in quality of life that make meaningful differences to patients.
Using emerging technologies in biologics, including platelet-rich plasma and stem cell utilization in surgical and nonsurgical treatments, to advance the principles of healing and regeneration.
Personal Background
I am married and have three daughters and a stepson. One lives in New York City, another in San Francisco and Montreal. Although we miss them, we truly enjoy traveling to visit.
Hobbies
Although I have retired from running, I am proud to have run four marathons. I am still active with yoga and cardio fitness.
I’m also rediscovering fatherhood through life with a feisty miniature schnauzer. Together, we enjoy peaceful walks — but our one to two-mile walks may take up to 1.5 hours. It depends on my dog’s smell for adventures that day.
Lastly, if I’m allowed, I enjoy spending time for myself on the golf course.
