My expertise lies in performing esophageal and foregut surgery, as well as handling complex cases, including revising failed previous surgeries—many of which were originally done minimally invasively. I have extensive experience in performing esophageal resections and reconstructions for cancer, and my expertise in this area is unparalleled in South Texas.
Career Highlights: I am regularly recognized as a Texas Super Doctor and have been selected annually by Best Doctors of America, Top Cancer Doctors and San Antonio Super Doctors.; I also hold board certifications in three surgical disciplines—general surgery, surgical critical care and thoracic surgery—which is a rare distinction.; After completing my training, I joined the faculty at UT Health San Antonio. Throughout my career, I have served in multiple leadership roles, including surgical director of cardiac transplantation, surgical director of lung transplantation and associate program director of the residency program. Following my passion for general thoracic surgery, I established the division of general thoracic surgery and served as its founding chief.; After performing cardiac surgery for more than a decade and lung transplantation for over 20 years, I chose to focus my practice primarily on esophageal and foregut surgery. I recognized that this was my most sought-after skill and my greatest contribution to the community. Today, I am nationally recognized as an expert in complex esophageal surgery, including esophageal cancer resections, revising failed anti-reflux procedures, repairing large diaphragmatic hernias, performing esophageal reconstructions (including colon interpositions), and treating end-stage achalasia.; I have authored several book chapters, journal articles, and “how-to” surgical atlas chapters on these procedures and have presented extensively at local, regional, and national conferences. In recognition of my expertise as a thoracic surgeon, I have also had the honor of serving as an invited guest examiner for the American Board of Thoracic Surgery.
