Unused, unwanted medicines can be a hazard; MedDropSA event lets you dispose of them safely
(SAN ANTONIO, TX) The misuse of prescription drugs is a major factor in the crisis of opioid addiction that has plagued our community and the nation. Experts recommend disposing of unused and expired medicines. But that can cause environmental problems if they’re flushed down the toilet or thrown in the trash to be buried in landfills.
MedDropSA is a safe, easy way to dispose of unwanted and expired over-the-counter and prescription medications. San Antonio residents can drop them off from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 16, at Alamo City Christian Fellowship Church, 6500 Interstate 35 North. Customers must bring a recent copy of their CPS bill and a picture ID as proof of residency.
Bring unwanted medicines, along with other household hazardous waste items, to the collection event. Medications will be accepted at no charge and disposed of in a safe, legal way – keeping these drugs off our streets and out of the environment.
The Joint Opioid Task Force was launched last month by Bexar County, the city of San Antonio and University Health to find solutions to the complex problem of opioid misuse and addiction in our community. The task force includes public health experts, medical and pharmaceutical professionals, first responders, policymakers, educators and social service agencies.
MedDropSA is sponsored by the San Antonio Water System, the San Antonio Police Department and the City of San Antonio’s Solid Waste Management Department, along with other partners. Since the program's inception in 2009, 40,043 pounds have been collected.
