University Health seeks artists for new Women’s and Children’s Hospital

It’s Contemporary Art Month, and University Health is seeking artists to join the SaludArte: Art of Healing program at the new Women’s and Children’s Hospital.

We know that exposure to art, nature, color and light is good for both patients and staff, and University Health has for years been committed to integrating these elements through its award-winning SaludArte program. With the construction of the new Women’s and Children’s Hospital, the SaludArte program has created another significant opportunity for artists to share in inspiring healing, compassion, hope and trust. Local, regional and national artists can participate in this open call to submit works, and the program’s art committee is particularly interested in works that appeal to women, children and families.

The SaludArte: Art of Healing program was established by University Health in 2010. Designed in three distinct phases – design enhancement, public art and art procurement – the programs feature more than 3,500 objects from numerous artists throughout University Hospital and the outpatient clinics. Other elements of the program bring artists into the hospital to create directly with patients and staff, through Art in the Garden, Art in the Lobby and Art to the Bedside. Art in a medical setting has been proven to provide positive distractions from worry and anxiety, faster healing with less medication, shorter hospital stays and greater staff retention. All interested creators are invited to join the open call for an opportunity to participate in this vision of healing through art.

Open Call Submission Information

Interested artists can find more information at https://www.publicartist.org. A variety of artwork types are being accepted, including mixed media and sculpture. The submission deadline is December 15, 2022.

Questions about the open call should be emailed to info@publicartist.org.

Video Interviews, B-Roll and Photos

Allison Hays Lane, curator and archivist, and China Whitby, program assistant, of SaludArte: Art of Healing are available for interviews about the program or the open call. You are welcome to use the video footage and photos included for news stories. Our goal is to encourage diversity in artists’ submissions participating in the art procurement program phase for the University Health Women and Children’s Hospital.

There will be an Art in the Garden event from 11 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. at University Hospital on Friday, March 25.

San Antonio printmakers and sisters Manola and Maria Ramirez will use ink to press images onto other surfaces like paper or wood, and attendees will have an opportunity to participate in a hands-on activity and take home their own print.
