Two New Members of Bexar County Hospital District Sworn In
(SAN ANTONIO, TX – May 27, 2014) The two newest members of the Bexar County Hospital District Board of Managers officially took their seats at the board’s regular meeting Tuesday night after they were sworn in by Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff.
Dr. Dianna M. Burns and Bo Gilbert both were nominated by Judge Wolff, and appointed to the board by Bexar County Commissioners Court. They replace Alexander E. Briseño, who was named chairman of VIA Metropolitan Transit in February; and Rebecca Q. Cedillo, who also was appointed to the VIA Board of Trustees.
Afterward, Burns was elected secretary of the Board of Managers, filling the office that had been held by Cedillo.
“I’m very pleased to welcome Dr. Burns and Bo Gilbert to our table,” said James Adams, who chairs the seven-member Board of Managers. “Both have a long and distinguished record of community service and advocacy, and I know they will contribute greatly to the stewardship of University Health System.”
Burns is a board-certified pediatrician, and president and medical director of the South Texas Center for Pediatric Care. She is a past-president of the Bexar County Medical Society, and chaired the Texas Medical Association’s committee on Children and Adolescent Health. She also serves as a member of the Board of Directors of Community First Health Plans, a subsidiary of University Health System and the only locally owned, non-profit health insurance provider in Bexar County.
Gilbert has served as assistant vice president of government relations at USAA since 2006, managing government and industry relations for a 13-state region. He has more than 30 years of insurance management experience. Prior to joining USAA, he was director of governmental affairs at the Independent Insurance Agents of Texas.
The Bexar County Hospital District was established by the Texas Legislature in 1955. Its volunteer members, who oversee University Health System, are appointed by Commissioners Court for two-year terms. There are no limits on how many times a member can be reappointed.
Other board members are Linda Rivas, vice chair; Dr. Roberto L. Jimenez, immediate past chair; Robert Engberg and Ira Smith Jr.
