New RN Graduates Begin Nurse Residency Program
San Antonio’s first AACN Nurse Residency Program kicks-off at University
BACKGROUND: Forty new registered nurse graduates with bachelor’s degrees in nursing will begin a yearlong nursing residency program incorporating the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) curriculum at University Hospital, the lead Level I trauma center for South Texas.
The first and only AACN nurse residency program in San Antonio will be facilitated by University Health System nurse experts with special emphasis on:
- Critical thinking skills
- Leadership abilities
- Communications skills
- Research-based practice
- Patient safety
- Professional career development plan
The goal is to support the development of the nurse resident as a professional nurse, with an emphasis on promoting bedside clinical leadership skills. The accredited program’s curriculum has been tailored to University Health System’s professional practice model of care. University Health System is home to more than 1,500 registered nurses.
Beginning tomorrow, August 13, nurse residents will begin earning more than 400 hours of training in the simulation lab at University Hospital.
