University Hospital is Ranked #1 in San Antonio

For the first time, U.S.News & World Report ranks in America’s 52 largest metro areas

University Hospital is named the best in San Antonio by U.S.News & World Report. U.S. News released its first-ever edition of the “Best Hospitals Metro Area Rankings” for 52 metro areas across the country this week. Of all 36 hospitals in the area, including New Braunfels, only six were top-ranking. The new rankings recognize more than 600 hospitals in or near major cities with a record of high performance in key medical specialties, including 132 of the 152 hospitals already identified by U.S. News as the best in the nation.

University Hospital was ranked in six different specialties, including kidney disorders, cancer, diabetes and endocrinology, orthopedics, rehabilitation and urology.

“University Health System is proud of its dedicated and committed physicians, nurses and staff that provides the highest level of care to all patients,” said George B. Hernández, Jr., President/CEO, University Health System. “We are very excited about this accomplishment. It is a reflection of our staff’s hard work, and our commitment to the people of Bexar County.”

"These are hospitals capable of providing first-rate care for the majority of patients, even for those with serious conditions or who need demanding procedures," said Health Rankings Editor Avery Comarow. "For most medical problems, the new Best Hospitals metro rankings can tell you which hospitals are worth considering if you live in or near a major metro area.”

The report shows that Best Hospitals are at the top because of their extraordinary expertise and ranked by the number of specialties in which they outperformed most hospitals nationwide. Using the same data that produced the 2010-11 national rankings, U.S. News reviewed all hospitals nationwide that met certain stringent standards for patient volume and other important benchmarks. From that group of hospitals, U.S. News then selected facilities that scored in the top 25 percent in at least one of 16 medical specialties and ranked those located in metro areas with a population of 1 million or more.

University Health System was ranked in the Top 50 in the nation for the care of patients with kidney disorders, in U.S.News & World Report’s 2010-11 Best Hospitals report. The metro area rankings will be updated in July when the 2011-12 national rankings are released.
