Prepare yourself and your family for a safer journey through flu season

As flu season approaches, University Health and Bexar County are partnering to help residents protect themselves and their families with free flu vaccinations at four drive-thru events throughout September and October.

“We are preparing for a particularly aggressive flu season,” said Dr. Leo Lopez III, vice president, Community and Population Health Strategy. “The flu vaccine is the best tool to help prevent severe illness and lower your risk of hospitalization.”

Lopez also encourages people to take practical steps to help prevent the spread of influenza, including staying home when sick, covering coughs and sneezes, washing hands frequently and cleaning commonly touched surfaces, such as doorknobs and light switches.

“Even if you’re young, active and fully confident that your body can handle the flu, preparing for flu season isn’t just about protecting yourself – it’s about protecting the people around you,” Lopez said. “You may be able to contract and spread the virus before you feel a single symptom. This could mean exposing others, whether they are co-workers, elderly family members or even vulnerable strangers at the grocery store.”

“By getting vaccinated and practicing good public health hygiene, you can help build a wall of protection around young children, seniors and immunocompromised people in our community,” Lopez said.

Adults and children ages 6 months and older can receive free vaccinations without leaving their vehicles. The flu vaccinations are free, but advance registration is required. Register here.

The drive-thru flu vaccines will be offered 8 a.m.-noon at the following community events:
