Families gather to raise awareness of the vital importance of organ donation
After losing a loved one, to know that person’s heart beats on in another, allowing that person to live, gives many family members a measure of peace along with their sorrow. But too many people don’t think about the gift of life they could give – simply by registering as an organ donor.
Right now in the United States, almost 120,000 men, women and children need a life-saving transplant. In Texas alone, 11,000 people are waiting for an organ donation.
On Friday, a crowd of patients, donor families and staff will dress in blue and green and gather outside University Hospital to draw attention to this critical need during Donate Life Month. Speakers representing University Health System, Texas Organ Sharing Alliance, organ recipients and donor families with talk about the importance of this ultimate act of generosity. They will parade as a group around the hospital and into the lobby, where the traveling exhibit The Art of the Scar will be on display, on loan from The Gallery at UNOS.
