Leaving a Legacy of Leadership & Commitment in the Fight Against Diabetes

Magda Ortiz, a research nurse who died tragically last summer, will be inducted to the “Wall of Honor” at Texas Diabetes Institute this Wednesday evening

BACKGROUND: Diabetes is the 4th leading cause of death in Bexar County. An estimated 240,000 people in Bexar County are living with diabetes. Thousands of these children and adults living with the disease are unaware that they have it. In fact, 68,000 remain undiagnosed. That’s why Magda S. Ortiz, a research nurse at the Texas Diabetes Institute, was so passionate about improving the lives of people with diabetes and the search for a cure.

Ortiz devoted a great deal of her career to diabetes research. She led the research center and core laboratory activities at Texas Diabetes Institute. The Texas Diabetes Institute opened its doors in 1999 with an ambitious mission to prevent diabetes and its complications through health promotion, patient education, professional training, treatment and research. The Texas Diabetes Institute is a national center of excellence in the care for diabetes and a global leader in the relentless quest for a cure through research. People are beating the odds because of the work being done at Texas Diabetes Institute.

The names of individuals already on the “Wall of Honor,” demonstrate the many hands and talented minds that come together at this place to bring about the miracles that are truly changing lives and giving hope for a healthier future.

Ortiz will be the eleventh inductee to the Texas Diabetes Institute “Wall of Honor” tomorrow evening for its support.

The Texas Diabetes Institute’s “Wall of Honor” was created to identify and honor individuals and organizations of Bexar County who have significantly contributed to the fight against diabetes.
