It’s another ‘A’ for University Health hospital safety from The Leapfrog Group

University Health has earned its fourth consecutive “A” Hospital Safety Grade from The Leapfrog Group, an independent national nonprofit watchdog focused on patient safety.

“Earning an ‘A’ grade from the Leapfrog Group recognizes University Health as a national leader in patient safety,” said University Health Chief Medical Officer Dr. Bryan Alsip. “This level of achievement requires robust systems and strict clinical protocols to prevent errors, infections and injuries. It demonstrates our commitment to delivering the highest quality and safest patient care.”

A process may be something as simple, but critical, as reinforcing handwashing and hand sanitizing routines when entering and leaving patient rooms. Unwavering attention to detail—every day for every patient—becomes a complex operation that calls for full participation by every staff member.

Leapfrog assigns an “A,” “B,” “C,” “D” or “F” grade to general hospitals across the country based on more than 30 measures of errors, accidents, injuries and infections, as well as the systems hospitals have in place to prevent them.

Because the Leapfrog standards, metrics and benchmarks evolve with each performance period, sustaining such high performance requires constant improvement, Alsip said.

“Achieving an ‘A’ Hospital Safety Grade reflects enormous dedication to patient safety,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “I extend my congratulations to University Health, its leadership, clinicians, staff and volunteers for creating a culture where patients come first.”

The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade stands as the only hospital ratings program focused solely on preventable medical errors, infections and injuries that kill more than 500 patients a day in the United States. This program is peer-reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public. Grades are updated twice annually, in the fall and spring.
