Graduates of PREMIEre Program return to celebrate
BACKGROUND: Some were so tiny they could be held in one hand. Today, they’re running and jumping like other kids. These premature babies who developed for weeks or months in University Hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit will reunite with the doctors and nurses who provided expert care at the start of their lives.
Since 1981, the PREMIEre Program has helped hundreds of miracle babies and their families go from small beginnings to great expectations. Sponsored by UT Medicine San Antonio and University Health System, the program monitors the development of premature infants (those weighing less than 3 pounds) from birth through age 3, when the child officially “graduates” from the program. Routine follow-ups provide support for parents and help the vast majority of “preemies” grow up to be normal, healthy children and adults.WHO: PREMIEre Program “graduates,” ages 3-34 years (Many dressed in Halloween costumes) and neonatal caregivers.
