From Nurse Resident to Skilled Registered Nurse

University Health graduates its first class of nurse residents

BACKGROUND: Thirty-seven registered nurses will be walking across the stage after completing the new Nurse Residency Program at University Health. The first graduating class of nurse residents has dedicated an entire year to the program immediately after earning their Bachelor of Science in nursing degrees. Each nurse resident has been guided and mentored by experienced nursing staff.

The nurse residents also received a strategic, well-planned blend of classroom and hands-on experience during the program. And their progress was evaluated regularly with input from clinical nurse experts. The new Nurse Residency Program at University Health is designed to ease the transition from nursing student to skilled registered nurse, improving patient care.

In partnership with the UT Health Science Center School of Nursing, the program started in August 2013. University Health is the only health system with an American Association of Colleges of Nursing Nurse Residency Program in San Antonio, and the first and only health organization in San Antonio to earn Magnet status from the American Nurses Credentialing Center.
