From Completely Shattered to Beautifully Broken

Local Author and Mother of a University Hospital Trauma Survivor Shares Her Family’s Journey in Newly Published Book

BACKGROUND: On Nov. 3, 2007, 16-year-old David Kozowyk was critically injured in a horrific crash after he lost control of his mom’s pickup truck and rolled over into a creek. David was airlifted to University Hospital, the lead level 1 trauma center in South Texas, and only certified pediatric trauma center in the region.

Such an injury is every parent’s nightmare. Fortunately, David survived through the expert care of his medical team and the support of family and friends. “David was not expected to live, but through medical care, miracles and the power of prayer, he did,” said his mother, Rebecca Boone Kozowyk. “My son is a miracle and I’m thankful to God and all the doctors and nurses who provided the best of care.”

While in the hospital with David, his mother began to journal David’s road to recovery and rehabilitation, as well as her family’s experience through this season of change. She then decided to turn her writings into a book to help reach other families experiencing similar circumstances.

Members of David’s family will come together on Friday, Aug. 2, to celebrate David’s life, to thank the pediatric team that saved him and to talk about their commitment to offer comfort to others through Rebecca Kozowyk’s newly published book, “Beautifully Broken.” She will be signing copies of the book, which is available in the gift shop at University Hospital.
