$899.4 million construction program kicks-off Saturday at University Hospital

BACKGROUND: One of the largest construction programs in Bexar County history officially gets underway Saturday morning as University Health System sinks shovels into the ground for the first of three new structures included in its Target 2012: Capital Improvement Program. Over the next five years, University Health System, owned by the people of Bexar County, will be transforming its two largest campuses: University Hospital in the Medical Center and University Health System - Robert B. Green Campus, site of the former Robert B. Green Hospital built in 1915.

The expansion and renovation project includes:

  • A new 10-story hospital tower in front of University Hospital
  • A new 3,300-space parking garage at University Hospital
  • A new diagnostic/treatment building at University Health System - Robert B. Green Campus
  • Increased parking at the downtown campus
  • A new convenient outpatient pharmacy downtown
  • Extensive renovations at both locations

The project is also a welcome “shot in the arm” to the Bexar County economy – as University Health System is working closely with Bexar County Commissioners to assure that as much of the work as possible is done by local businesses and construction subcontractors.
