University Health Historic Expansion Continues
An additional building adding primary care and specialty outpatient services
By December, University Health expects to close on the sale of a two-story medical office building on its 45-acre Babcock Campus property purchased from Christus Health in 2025.
This 27,000-square-foot building at 5107 Medical Drive will be the third medical facility University Health has purchased on the campus. The medical office building is adjacent to University Health Babcock Specialty Hospital, which is currently under renovation and scheduled to open in 2027.
University Health President and CEO Ed Banos said this additional facility allows the health system to continue expanding access to primary care, women’s health and pediatric services in the often-congested South Texas Medical Center at a location with ample parking and easy access.
“As our patient volumes have grown, we have been looking for opportunities to increase our capacity in the Medical Center. This building allows us to do that while making better use of the former Christus campus,” Banos told the San Antonio Business Journal.
The Bexar County Hospital District Board of Managers approved $5.2 million for the purchase of the building and $8.3 million for renovations and equipment.
The Babcock Campus is being developed as an extension of University Health’s existing presence in the Medical Center, with the goal of freeing up capacity at University Health’s main campus.
