A Milestone Moment: Topping Out at University Health Retama Hospital

We are literally building a brighter future for health care.

University Health Foundation was honored to celebrate the topping out of University Health’s Retama Hospital in Selma. This powerful milestone represents progress, purpose and the promise of better health for our entire community.

This moment marks another exciting step forward in our mission to advance the work of University Health through our ROOTED campaign. With your support, we are funding transformative projects and programs that improve access to care, break down barriers to health and double down on clinical excellence. Together, we are shaping a future where world-class care is within reach for every family in our region.

During the ceremony, attendees signed the final steel beam before it was hoisted more than 96 feet into place. Weighing in at 408 pounds, it will support one of the hospital’s critical trauma elevators and stand as a lasting symbol of what we can accomplish when we come together.

Scheduled to open in 2027, Retama Hospital will be a full-service, state-of-the-art facility designed to expand to 286 beds to meet the growing health care needs of Northeast Bexar County and surrounding communities. Located along the I-35 corridor at Retama Parkway and Lookout Road, the hospital will bring advanced care closer to home for so many in our region.

Thank you to our incredible friends and donors who joined us for a glimpse into the future of health care and the exponential impact it will have for generations to come.

We are truly building a healthier, brighter future for South Texas!
