- I am a pediatric heart surgeon at University Health and chief of pediatric cardiothoracic surgery at UT Health San Antonio. I served for six years as an active-duty officer in the United States Navy and was appointed to several management and leadership positions, receiving many commendations and awards during my military career. In 2006, I graduated with honors from the University of Michigan Medical School.
- I completed my general surgery residency at Indiana University School of Medicine, while also completing the Clinical Investigator Training Enhancement Program and earning my Master of Science in Clinical Research. In 2016, I completed a thoracic surgery residency at Emory University, and in 2017, a congenital cardiac fellowship at Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles. I have extensive experience with ECMO, VAD implantation in children with congenital heart disease and cardiac and lung transplantation.
- On a more personal note, I am married to Dr. Ginnie Abarbanell, the division chief of Pediatric Cardiology for University Health’s Congenital Heart Center and UT Health San Antonio’s Department of Pediatrics. We have two wonderful children ages 10 and 14.
- I'm interested in outcomes research, international research ethics, international medical missions and cycling.
