University Health Vida: a new chapter of health care in South Bexar County

Picture of the group that participated in this year's Kids Heart CampFor the third year, children born with congenital heart conditions traded hospital visits for horseback rides, zip lines, water fights and new friendships during University Health's annual Kids Heart Camp at Morgan's Camp.

For many of the 24 campers, this weekend represented something they once thought was out of reach. Before Kids Heart Camp began three years ago, many had never attended an overnight camp because of their medical conditions. Today, they can experience the same adventures as their peers while their University Health physicians, nurses and care teams are nearby, giving families the confidence to say "yes" to a weekend of fun.

The camp's inclusive environment allows children to simply be kids while making memories, trying new activities and building friendships with others who understand their journey.

"Our 3rd annual Kids Heart Camp was a huge success, with more campers attending than ever before," said Jessica Luna, Certified Child Life Specialist at University Health. "What truly sets this camp apart is that their shared cardiac journey creates an immediate bond. They can be themselves, support one another and leave with memories that will last a lifetime."

The weekend was made possible through the generous support of the Valero Benefit For Children, whose commitment helped create an unforgettable experience for every child and family.

Kids Heart Camp also reflects University Health's broader commitment to advancing cardiovascular care across South Texas. As University Health builds a world-class, patient-centered Cardiovascular Center, the goal extends beyond providing exceptional clinical care. It is also about supporting patients and families throughout every stage of their journey.
