Diagnosing Kidney Conditions

Expect your kidney doctor to review your child’s medical history and perform a physical exam at the first appointment. Your child may have some tests to help diagnose their condition. Same-day or scheduled tests may include:

  • Height and weight measurements
  • Blood pressure reading
  • Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM)
  • Urine test
  • Blood test
  • Imaging tests
    • Kidney ultrasound
    • Voiding cystourethrogram (VCUG)
    • Kidney nuclear scan
    • CT or MRI scans of the kidneys
  • Kidney biopsy

Treatment Planning

After your doctor reviews the test results, you’ll get a full explanation of your child’s condition. Your pediatric nephrologist will recommend tailored treatments for your child with the best possible long-term outcome.
