Why summer is the best time to schedule your child’s back-to-school health appointments

As families prepare for a new school year, healthcare providers encourage parents to schedule annual checkups, vaccinations, sports physicals and other school-related health appointments before the back-to-school rush begins. Taking care of these needs early can help ensure children are healthy, prepared and ready to learn on the first day of class.

As part of our KSAT Community partnership, University Health shares why summer is the ideal time to complete important back-to-school healthcare requirements, update medications and action plans, and avoid last-minute scheduling challenges. The story also highlights University Health’s school-based health centers and the role they play in serving families throughout the San Antonio community.

“Now is the best time to bring your children in for annual well-child visits, immunizations and sports physicals,” said Dr. Michelle Rodriguez, University Health’s medical director of School-Based, Mobile and Community Health. “We can also help update asthma action plans and other paperwork needed for medications at school.”
