University Health earns 5th consecutive Best Maternity Hospital award from Newsweek

Once again University Health has been awarded Best Maternity Hospital by Newsweek. This recognition of our commitment to the highest level of care for new mothers and infants makes us extraordinarily proud.

“This distinction results from our staff’s tireless commitment to the health and wellbeing of women and children in Bexar County and South Texas,” said Irene Sandate, chief nursing officer for University Health Women’s & Children’s Hospital.

Recognition of our commitment to the highest level of care

Our Level IV Maternal Center and ambulatory teams offer the highest level of comprehensive care to support moms during their pregnancy and every step of the way through birth and the postpartum period. If an infant needs specialized care, experts in our Level IV Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) are available to care for our smallest patients with knowledge and compassion.

Supporting parents, their babies and the entire family promotes patient satisfaction, family health and the health of the community as a whole. A comfortable, beautiful environment, compassionate care and practice-changing customized nutrition for the most fragile infants all contribute to the best start in life for our newborns.

Methodology

A hospital qualifies as a Newsweek Best Maternity Hospital based on three pillars:

  • Hospital quality metrics with a focus on indicators relevant to maternity care: These indicators include the percentage of newborns that were exclusively fed breast milk as well as high patient safety scores from the Leapfrog Group.
  • Patient experience from public hospital survey data: Survey topics include patients’ perspectives on the quality of the care they received as well as their satisfaction with their stay, answering questions about cleanliness, communication, staff responsiveness and other factors affecting their stay.
  • Reputation score: Health care professionals and hospital managers with knowledge about maternity processes: neonatal and perinatal doctors, nurses and midwives were asked to recommend leading maternity hospitals in the U.S.
