It’s as if it was always meant to be here.
The 14,000-lb Flor de Esperanza headed out at dawn from its North Side storage place and rolled down U.S. Hwy 281 to its new home at University Health Palo Alto Hospital.
A 135-ton crane lifted it from the truck bed and swung it ever so carefully to its plinth, where it sits bright as a lemon in front of the hospital.
“It was amazing, a true art adventure” said SaludArte Executive Curator Allison Hays Lane, who has overseen four moves and two installations of the Flor de Esperanza. “And it will be a vibrant beacon for the South Side.”
“I did have to come up with a plan B for the piece, but that’s how we roll at University Health,” Hays Lane said. And the sculpture got community buy-in before it even reached its new home.
“People were honking at us from the road and giving us the thumbs up,” Lane said. “It was a journey for me, and I’m so lucky the team today was the team we had last time so we were a well-oiled machine.”
The sculpture by internationally acclaimed artist Sebastián now stands to welcome a community that has long awaited better access to advanced healthcare close to home. Its arrival symbolizes hope, renewal and University Health's enduring commitment to investing in the communities it serves.
It also represents another milestone in the transformation of the 68-acre Palo Alto campus. The new hospital opens in spring 2027. It is designed to provide both outstanding clinical care and an environment where art, architecture and nature support healing and human connection-and where people can recognize themselves in the cultural references and colors throughout.

Sebastian’s monumental public works can be found throughout the world, including several in San Antonio, the best-known of which is the iconic red Torch of Friendship downtown—presented as a gift from the Mexican government to the city in 2002.
Flor de Esperanza is so massive, it is equal to the weight of 2.5 Toyota Tundra trucks, manufactured down the road from Palo Alto Hospital. A second, smaller Sebastián sculpture, Espacio Tiempo, was also installed in what will be the garden at Palo Alto Hospital.
