Back-to-school immunizations

July 31, 2020

Whether kids are beginning the school year by attending virtual or in-person classes, they still need to receive their scheduled immunizations. It’s especially important this year, as we also take precautions to avoid COVID-19 while also protecting against dangerous, preventable childhood illnesses.

The State of Texas requires students to be up-to-date with their shots, in the process of getting them or have a valid exemption when school begins.

Because of COVID-19 concerns, the big immunization events traditionally organized before the beginning of school are much smaller this year. University Health System is still offering immunizations through four school-based clinics.

“This year we are requiring appointments, but we still have plenty of availability,” said Kathy Diaz, director of healthcare services for University Health Systems. In most cases, parents can make an appointment for the same or following day at one of the clinics, she said.

The clinics are located at Tafolla Middle School in SAISD; next to the administration building in Southside ISD; in front of Collier Elementary in Harlandale ISD; and next to the administration building in Southwest ISD. Children from all Bexar County school districts can receive their immunizations at these clinics. There’s an online map with addresses and directions to the clinics.

Parents can schedule an appointment through the website HealthyUExpress.com. They can also call 210-358-7020.

Providers will either bill the family’s insurance company or work with those who do not have insurance coverage.

“No child will be turned away because of cost,” said Diaz.

Unsure what immunizations your child needs? The Texas Department of State Health Services provides a list of vaccine requirements for K-12, Pre-K, and childcare facilities on their website.
