Comprehensive Care for Kidney Conditions

Kidney conditions can range from minor to life-changing. University Health nephrologists provide comprehensive care for kidney diseases throughout South Texas.

Pediatric Center of Excellence for Transplants

Caring for pediatric kidneys is one of our specialties, too. University Health ranks in the top 5% of pediatric nephrology programs in the United States in terms of the number of patients transplanted.

We partner with UT Health San Antonio to provide comprehensive kidney care for newborns, young children and adolescents, including the only pediatric kidney transplant center in San Antonio. Our vast experience with pediatric kidney patients matters most when your child needs help.

University Health also has been designated as a Center of Excellence for Aetna and Cigna health insurance companies. This recognition means we are their pediatric transplant center of choice in the San Antonio area. We’ve earned this designation in part for the attention we show pediatric kidney transplant patients. We follow all of our young patients throughout their lives and help them transition from pediatric to adult programs.

Full Range of Kidney Care for All Ages in Variety of Settings

University Health provides care in the hospital, care at our clinics, care at our dialysis centers and, sometimes, care at your home. We see adults and children for routine kidney problems, complex kidney diseases, dialysis and transplant care.

Conditions

University Health nephrologists have experience treating thousands of people with routine and complicated nephrology conditions including chronic kidney disease, kidney failure, diabetic kidney disease and hypertension disorders.

Testing & Diagnosis

We provide testing and expert analysis to diagnose kidney diseases. We also provide testing to determine if you are a candidate for kidney transplant and the ongoing post-transplant care you need to maintain the health of your transplant.

Treatment

The right care in the right place. That’s what University Health provides – inpatient, outpatient, dialysis centers and home (peritoneal dialysis). We offer highly specialized dialysis and transplant care as well as top-notch general nephrology care. We apply our three decades of experience to meet your kidney treatment needs.

Kidney Support

Chronic Kidney Disease Education

University Health offers chronic kidney disease education about diet, medication, self-care and ways to prevent progression of your disease. This service is provided by a nurse educator in our Renal Clinic, part of University Health's Texas Diabetes Institute (TDI). You can choose from two convenient TDI San Antonio locations or the Medical Arts & Research Center (MARC).

Transplant Support

We care about and care for our transplant patients forever. Our team members form deep, caring relationships with our transplant families. We’re in constant communication to help ensure long-term success of your kidney transplant.

When you’re on the transplant wait list, we provide guidance about health, nutrition and medications. For pediatric patients on the wait list, we provide families with resources to help manage your child’s daily activities, such as school and play.

We also work closely with your referring and primary care providers to co-manage your care and health before and after transplant.
